Middletown , New York - New York State Department of Environmental Conservation wildlife technician Greg Cerne holds a Canada goose gosling at by a lake in Middletown, New York. The DEC herded the geese into a pen and then banded the geese that did not already have bands. Geese are banded in late June and early July because they are molting and unable to fly. Banding helps scientists learn about the birds' migration, feeding patterns and other behaviors.
