Newburgh, NY - Kipp van Aken, the chief engineer of the Half Moon, explains how sailors measured the depth of the river with a sounding line or lead line to visitors on the ship. The Half Moon, a full-scale, operating replica of the Dutch ship of exploration that Henry Hudson sailed in 1609, was docked on the Hudson River during the finale of the Newburgh Beacon Bay Quadricentennial celebration on Nov. 7, 2009.
